Best friend arrested in dentist’s rape case

Ranchi: A 26-year-old woman, at whose birthday party a dentist was allegedly raped on April 9, was arrested on Tuesday for alleged attempts to tamper with evidence, police said on Wednesday. The 25-year-old survivor and the woman were best friends, the police added.Two men — the main accused, and his friend, both aged 27 years — were arrested from West Bengal earlier on Tuesday. The main accused's friend also tried to suppress information regarding the incident. The accused woman's boyfriend, who hosted the birthday party, is on the run, police said.SP (city) Paras Rana said the survivor fell ill after eating cake and pizza at the event. The main accused, taking advantage of her illness, raped her. Although she attempted to contact police, the accused woman prevented her from doing that, he said. "Police also unearthed evidence of the woman trying to hide vital information regarding the crime," he added. The SP said that the police were informed about the incident through an anonymous call made by one of the survivor's friends on Sunday."When we contacted her, she shared details of the incident, prompting us to launch a search for the accused. Two of the accused fled from after finding out the survivor had informed the police. An FIR has been registered against the three under relevant sections of BNS and they were sent to jail," Rana said.The junior doctors' association of Rims protested on Wednesday against the crime and expressed solidarity with the survivor. The association demanded a speedy trial and strict punishment for the accused.
