Bengal man arrested with 130 grams of brown sugar in Deoghar

Dumka: A man from West Bengal was arrested in Deoghar with 130 grams of brown sugar late on Thursday. The accused Ajay Mardi, a resident of Asansol in West Bardhaman district, was carrying the contraband in 317 pouches. The seized item is priced at Rs 50 lakh, the police said on Friday.Led by subdivisional police officer Ashok Kumar Singh, a police team arrested Mardi from Jasidih police station limits when he was about to supply them to the addicts. Police also recovered a mobile and a railway ticket from Kali Pahari (Asansol) to Jasidih railway station.Deoghar SP Saurabh said Mardi sourced brown sugar from West Bengal and here to supply it to local buyers. “He had been evading arrested until now. Mardi named some of his accomplices and their roles are currently being investigated,” he said.“Following leads from the accused, police will target local buyers and procurement sites in Deoghar with an approach to dismantle the smuggling network and make the district drug-free,” he added.The SP appealed Deoghar residents to support the anti-drug campaign by sharing information anonymously with police and assured confidentiality for informants.“Police do not intend to bring youngsters to book for consuming drugs. Rather, we want to help them out of the menace. Parents are required to inform the police if they find their wards addicted,” SP said.
