Dumka: A team of doctors at the Deoghar-based All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) successfully removed a 12kg cancerous mass from a 55-year-old male patient’s abdomen, it said in a statement. The tumour, measuring nearly 50cm in length, severely compromised the patient’s quality of life for months. This surgery was performed on April 4.
A resident of Uttar Pradesh, travelled to Deoghar seeking specialised care after the abdominal mass grew to an extremely large size, doctor said.
By the time he arrived at AIIMS Deoghar, his condition was critical. The tumour occupied a significant portion of his abdominal cavity, exerting immense pressure on internal organs.
Following the intricate seven-hour-long surgery, the medical team confirmed the successful extraction of the entire mass. The patient’s recovery exceeded expectations and he is recovering well, the doctors said.
The patient received the whole treatment completely free of cost under the centrally sponsored
Ayushman Bharat Yojana.
"The success of the surgery highlights the growing capabilities of the premier institute in the region," Professor Nitin M Gangane, executive director of AIIMS Deoghar, said.
