DUMKA/RANCHI:A woman and her daughter were killed while her husband, a professor, sustained injuries when their car was involved in an accident in Jharkhand on Saturday.
The family was on their way back from Dumka, Jharkhand, to Bolpur in West Bengal when the accident occurred near the Ranishwar area.
A senior police officer said that it is unclear how the accident took place and mentioned that the professor himself was driving the car.
Local residents took the three individuals to a nearby hospital in Raniswar.
Later, they were taken to Suri Sadar Hospital where Puspalata Jena (50), the professor's wife, and their daughter Sukriti Jena (25), were pronounced dead.
Santanu Jena, who is a professor at Visva Bharati's Silpa Sadana, was receiving medical treatment at the Suri hospital and his condition was described as critical.
The professor sustained a severe injury, and there is a possibility that one of his legs might need to be amputated, according to the officer.
An investigation into the accident has been started.
