The incident took place when hundreds of villagers gathered at Birni market on Dhanteras. The deceased have been identified as Sukhdeo Yadav (45) of Dhanwar and Yasoda devi (42) of Manjhladih village under Birni PS. Those injured were admitted in a local hospital at Rajdhanwar and at least ten people with serious injured were referred to different hospitals in Asonsol and Ranchi.

Outraged over the incident, villagers blocked the

main road for more than seven hours. The agitators alleged that the driver was drunk at the time of the incident. The blockade, which began at around 04:30 am was lifted at 12:30 pm, after Sariya - Bagodar SDPO Deepak Sharma and SDM Pawan Mandal, along with other officials arrived at the site.

Apart from demanding immediate action against the culprit, the villagers, backed by local panchayat representatives, also demanded adequate compensation for the deceased's family.
