Dhanbad: Two people were killed and nine others were injured after a speeding SUV, in which they were travelling, collided with a truck near Dumri referral hospital, along NH-2 under Dumri police station of Giridih district on Wednesday afternoon.
While, one of the deceased has been identified as Umesh Kumar Das (40), the name of another victim is yet to be confirmed by police.
All are residents of Modidih village under Katras block of Dhanbad district, police said. The incident took place at around 1: 30 pm, when the SUV carrying 11 persons, was on its way from Katras to the Sonapahri, a religious spot in Beko village under Bagodar block of Giridih.
"Soon after getting information, a team of Dumri police visited the spot and took the victims to the Dumri based Meena hospital. Almost four of the seriously injured victims have been referred to PMCH in Dhanbad," said Dumri DSP, Arvind Kumar Sinha.
"Both the vehicles were travelling in the same direction and the SUV had been following the truck. As soon as the heavy vehicle took a left turn for its destination towards Bokaro, the SUV hit the truck from behind, killing one of the passengers on the spot. While another succumbed to his injuries during treatment at Meena hospital," said Dumri PS in-charge, Shyam Chandra Singh.
"We have already informed the deceased's relatives, as soon as the deceased's relatives arrive, we will send the bodies for autopsy," Singh said adding that a case has been lodged with the Dumri PS in this regard.
Giridih deputy commissioner Umashankar Singh had chalked out various plans to cope with the traumatic situations on NH-2. However, nothing concrete could be seen on ground.
