HAZARIBAG: Ten people, including two students of an engineering college of Kalyani University in West Bengal, were killed on the spot and over 12 people were injured in four different road accidents that took place here during the last 12 hours.
In the first accident, five people travelling in a car died on the spot at Pandeywara village in Chouparan on Sunday when the vehicle in which they were travelling dashed a truck standing beside the road.
According Chouparan police, all the ill-fated passengers were from West Bokaro colliery of Tata Steel and they were going to participate in a wedding function in Gaya.
The vehicle was totally smashed and could not be recognized, police said. Later police extricated the bodies from the debris of the car and sent them to Hazaribag Sadar Hospital for autopsy. The victims were identified as Pawan Narayan Singh, Shailendra Kumar, S N Rajwar, Rajiv Kumar Srivastava and Ganesh Paswan.
In another mishap, which took place near Hazaribag Bazar Samiti on Saturday evening, two engineering students Jitendra Kumar and Roshan Kumar who were returning to Hazaribag after taking their dinner from a roadside restaurant at Nagwan, were knocked down by a speeding truck on the NH-33. Both the victims were sons of government officials Chandramani Prasad and AK Parmar respectively.
In the third incident, a father and a son riding a motorcycle were knocked down by a speeding four-wheeler close to the Barkatha police station on the G T Road. The victims have been identified as Anwar Ali (55) and his son Sonu (20). The victims, who belonged to Bagodar in Giridih, were returning home when the tragedy occurred.
Immediately after the incident, angry local people blocked the road demanding arrest of the vehicle owners and payment of suitable compensation to the victims family. The blockade was lifted after the BDO and the Barkatha police station OC assured of suitable compensation.
In another accident near Singhani on NH-100, one woman was killed on the spot and another person was injured when the mini-bus in which they were travelling dashed against a tree after one of the wheels of the vehicle broke and the driver lost balance. The injured have been admitted to the Hazaribag Sadar hospital.
In the fourth mishap, about two dozen passengers were injured when the bus in which they were travelling from Ranchi to Patna suddenly fell into a ditch due to some mechanical fault and turned turtle near Ichak More on the Patna-Ranchi road (NH-33).
A rescue team from Hazaribag headed by SDO Binay Kumar Roy rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to the Hazaribag Sadar Hospital.
"The condition of all the injured are stated to be stable," said Roy.
