The student, Krishna Pandit, studying in the first year, was found hanging in a room at his house near a Jain derasar in the area under the jurisdiction of the Gandhigram police station on Wednesday.

Police found a suicide note purportedly written by Pandit in which he said he couldn't overcome the addiction to online gambling despite repeatedly being counselled by his friends. He also wrote that he lost a significant amount of money due to betting. He urged youngsters not to fall into this gambling trap, said police sources.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Pandit first consumed phenyl and then hanged himself. His parents discovered him hanging when they returned home. Emergency services were called, but the paramedics of the 108 ambulance declared him dead upon examination.

Gandhigram police registered a case of accidental death.

Krishna's father works at a private company on the Rajkot-Ahmedabad highway. The family is originally from Bihar.
