RAIPUR: Two men from Bilaspur were burnt to death late on Tuesday after their car skidded off the road and plunged nearly 30 feet into a gorge before bursting into flames in Chhattisgarh’s Korba district. The victims were on their way to attend the Taatapani Mahotsav, police said.
The accident occurred near Madanpur Nala bridge near Moraga police outpost. According to preliminary information, the victims – Gopal Chandra (42) and Arun Sen (36), both residents of Torwa in Bilaspur – had left for Taatapani village to join the ongoing festival. Around midnight, their vehicle went out of control and crashed into a deep valley.
Local passersby noticed the burning car in the gorge and immediately alerted police. A team from Moraga outpost, along with personnel from Bango police station, rushed to the spot, but by the time they arrived, the vehicle was engulfed in flames and both occupants had died.
Police informed the families of the victims, who reached the accident site early Wednesday morning.
Police said initial findings point to the car losing control, possibly due to high speed or poor visibility at night.
However, officers are examining all possible angles, including mechanical failure and road conditions.
Police officials have expressed grief over the tragic deaths and appealed to commuters to exercise extra caution while driving on hilly or poorly lit stretches, especially during late hours.
The Taatapani festival attracts visitors from several districts, and police said patrolling and safety measures are being strengthened on approach routes in the wake of the accident.
