The violence erupted a day before chief minister Bhupesh Baghel’s scheduled visit to Pathalgaon, around 100km from Jashpur district headquarters. Parts of the district observed a ‘bandh’ on Friday following a call by right-wing groups.

According to Jashpur additional SP Pratibha Pandey, police received complaints that some people were selling beef in a market in Jashpurnagar. A team went there and arrested three persons, including a woman, under Krishak Pashu Pariskshak Adhiniyam. Police say they seized 4-5kg beef from them.

Some right wing activists then thrashed and kicked the suspects in front of police, wrecked a few temporary shops and tried to set them on fire. A police team somehow marched the trio out of the market into a vehicle and other teams moved in to restore order.

Police officers said the market was being temporarily shifted to prevent any escalation. Locals want it demolished.

BJP leader

Vikramaditya Judeo

alleged that beef was being sold to “provoke sentiments”. Tension prevailed till late night and slogans were raised in front of the police station.
