BILASPUR: Amid all hue and cry over Delhi gangrape, police in Janjgir-Champa district of Chhattisgarh are now facing the heat after a gang rape victim-who was filmed and blackmailed for almost a year-attempted suicide by consuming pesticide following delay in registration of complaint against accused.
It is alleged that the accused are well connected and police deliberately delayed filing an FIR.
Victim, reportedly consumed pesticide on January 22 at Akaltara and was admitted to district hospital. Her family members, including her sister, recorded the victim's statement on a mobile phone and went to local media three days later, alleging that local police was shielding the accused.
They alleged in their complaint that the 20-year-old student was allegedly gangraped and an obscene MMS of the act was made by the accused who had threatened to make the clip public if she disclosed about the crime.
Driven to desperation, she attempted suicide.
Stung by victim's family going public, police arrested three accused- Aman Sharma, Siddhant Singh and
Pallavi Sharma, who allegedly served a drug-laced soft drink to the victim and helped the other accused commit rape when the victim visited her house a year ago. Another accused, identified as Kunal Kedia, is on the run. Later, the victim was shifted to Bilaspur-based Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Sciences from where she was again referred to the Apollo Hospital. Her condition is now reported to be stable. Police have recorded her statement and further investigations are on.
"Two constables have been suspended for their negligence in registering a first Information report (FIR) immediately after the matter came to notice. Investigations have begun and the police are now trying to re-construct events on how the crime took place since it is alleged that a girl was also involved in drugging the victim," police sources said.
