SECL's Gevra mine in Chhattisgarh set to become largest coal mine in Asia
RAIPUR: Chhattisgarh’s Gevra mine of South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) is set to become the largest coal mine in Asia after receiving environmental clearance on Tuesday to expand its production capacity to 70 million tons per annum from the current 52.5 million tonnes.
This milestone was achieved through the diligent efforts of the Ministry of Coal, which collaborated with the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEFCC) to swiftly obtain environmental clearance. The clearance highlights Gevra's significance as one of SECL's major projects in meeting the nation's energy needs.
Prem Sagar Mishra, Chairman-Cum-Managing Director of SECL, celebrated this achievement as a historic milestone for the Coal India team. He envisioned Gevra becoming the world's largest coal mine with advanced mining operations, marking a significant step towards realizing that goal.
Mishra expressed gratitude to the concerned ministries for their support in obtaining environmental clearance for Gevra, anticipating that soon SECL would boast the largest coal mine in Asia.
The Gevra coal mine, a megaproject of SECL, attained the status of the country's largest coal mine last year, with annual production reaching 52.5 million tons for FY 22-23. It has been contributing to the country's energy security for over 40 years, according to an SECL spokesperson.
Spanning approximately 10 kilometers in length and 4 kilometers in breadth, the mine employs eco-friendly mining technologies such as Surface Miner and Ripper Mining. It also utilizes high-capacity Heavy Earth Moving Machinery (HEMM) like the 42 Cum shovel and 240-ton dumper combination for overburden removal. Additionally, the mine features first-mile connectivity with conveyer belts, Silos, and a Rapid Loading System for efficient and eco-friendly coal evacuation.
