RAIPUR: Elmagunda, one of the most sensitive Maoist-affected regions of Sukma district in Chhattisgarh, has finally got electricity on the eve of India's 76th Independence Day.

With a population of approximately 500, Elmagunda sits near the borders of Sukma-Bijapur in Chhattisgarh and Telangana. Until now, most of the villagers had no access to electricity. A handful of residents had solar energy.

Bastar Range IG P Sundarraj said the village had missed out on electricity thus far due to Maoist violence. The successful electrification project was a collaborative effort between the Chhattisgarh State Power Distribution Company Limited (CSPDCL), district police and CRPF, he said. Today, each household in Elmagunda boasts of a functioning electricity connection.

The journey toward illumination began six months ago when security forces established a police camp in the heart of this Maoist-infested area. Sukma SP Kiran Chawan said: "After setting up the camp, we engaged in consistent dialogues with villagers, including those from Elmagunda, to increase awareness about Naxalite activities, encourage participation in village development, and ultimately fostering cooperation in various developmental initiatives."
