Miraculous escape for children after a rope bridge over a lake collapses

RAIPUR: A large number of people, including children, had a miraculous escape when a

rope bridge

over a lake collapsed during the “Sehatmandi”, a programme organised by the civic body for people for fun activities on Sunday, in

Rajnandgaon district

on Sunday.

Additional district superintendent of police Rajesh Agrawal told TOI that a child was saved from being drowned and later she was admitted to the hospital with head injuries. Few others have sustained minor injuries and were later given first aid at a nearby hospital. However, locals said a many people, including a large number of children, were on the bridge and were dancing to the tune of DJ music when one side of the ropes broke and the bridge tilted—plunging people in the water. Constables and boatmen present at the lake immediately swing into action rescued them. Indications are that there were about 300 people, mostly children on the bridge, but some of them clung onto the ropes.

The Sunday event,

Sehatmandi

, was organised by the local civic body for fun activities for the people during which a large number of people gather to participate in many events including cycling, dancing, physical exercises, dancing and boating.

The

district administration

has ordered an inquiry to find out the circumstances led to the incident and into the alleged negligence in allowing a large number of people to get onto the rope bridge across the lake.
