Nearly 18,500 inmates across 33 prisons in Chhattisgarh participated in a unique initiative where they took a holy bath with Ganga water

Deputy chief minister Vijay Sharma, who also holds the Home portfolio, brought the holy water from Prayagraj during his recent visit. The water was then distributed to all the jails in the state.

Deputy chief minister Vijay Sharma initiated this spiritual activity, offering inmates a chance for purification and spiritual merit

Sharma explained that the unique initiative was aimed at offering prisoners a chance for spiritual purification through a Ganga water bath. "Prisoners also desire to partake in the sacred tradition of Ganga Snan (bathing in the Ganges) to gain spiritual merit. Keeping this sentiment in mind, the state government organized this special event, providing inmates with an opportunity to cleanse themselves spiritually with holy Ganga water. This decision stems from our cultural values and is an integral part of our traditions," said Minister Sharma.

The inmates were excited about the initiative and enthusiastically participated in the holy bath, chanting "Har Har Gange." Videos and photos of the event were widely shared on social media, where prisoners can be seen taking the holy bath from the tank water.

Inspire positive thinking and self-transformation among the prisoners

The sacred water, brought from Triveni Sangam, was mixed with the water in the tank, and inmates in jails in Durg, Bilaspur, Surguja, and other places splashed the water on themselves while chanting mantras. They felt they were part of the spiritual and religious mega event being celebrated across the country.

Inmates expressed that it was beyond their imagination to be part of such a holy bath within jail premises. The jail administration believes that a bath with Ganga Jal will bring mental peace to prisoners, strengthen them spiritually, and inspire them to undergo self-transformation. It is hoped that this experience will encourage inmates to adopt positive thinking and strive to lead better lives, eventually reintegrating into society, an official added.
