‘Injury immaterial, people’s life insecure today’: 2 given life term for knife attack

Raipur: Observing that the life of common people is insecure today, and that such incidents create an atmosphere of fear in society, a Raipur court on Thursday awarded life imprisonment to two men for a pre-planned knife attack and robbery on a man during his morning walk. The third additional sessions judge, Shailesh Sharma, said the nature of the victim's injury was immaterial, emphasising that the fact a person was attacked with a sharp-edged weapon and looted during a morning walk was a serious and worrying factor."Such crimes create an atmosphere of fear and make ordinary citizens feel insecure. The court believes this is a suitable case to award the maximum punishment, not the minimum, to the accused," the court remarked.The convicts, identfied as Sheikh Shabbir alias S K Sabbir alias Babu (24) and Ashish Mirjha alias Liyan alias Bablu (25) were sentenced to life imprisonment under Section 394 of the IPC) and fined Rs 20,000 each. They were also awarded seven years of rigorous imprisonment under Section 397 of the IPC.The incident took place on Sept 1, 2022, when victim Devendra Sahu went for his morning walk around 4:45 am. At about 5:30 am, near Ekta Nagar, the accused attacked him with a knife, critically injuring his palm as he tried to grab the sharp-edged weapon, and robbed him of Rs 13,000. Despite being hurt, Sahu noted the registration number of their scooter, which led to their arrest the same day.An FIR was registered on Sept 1, 2022, and the chargesheet was filed on Aug 22, 2023. Additional public prosecutor Rahul Gupta represented the victim in court.
