Baghel, a prominent OBC leader, played a crucial role in reviving the Congress in Chhattisgarh and led the party to a landslide victory in the 2018 assembly elections. His tenure as Chief Minister (2018-2023) was marked by pro-farmer policies, rural development initiatives, and a strong political presence against the BJP. However, Congress lost in the 2023 state elections, and Baghel was replaced by BJP’s Vishnu Deo Sai as chief minister.

His elevation to the national level is being seen as part of Congress’s 'Rajasthan Formula,' where senior leaders are being strategically positioned to manage key states. Meanwhile, speculation is rife that former Deputy Chief Minister T S Singh Deo, another senior leader from Chhattisgarh, may be appointed as the state Congress president to balance regional leadership.
