Raipur: Congress leader Vikram Bais, aged 40, was shot dead in Narayanpur district of Bastar on Monday late evening. The attack, possibly motivated by personal animosity, led to his immediate death. Preliminary investigations suggest no Maoist involvement. The incident has caused fear and uncertainty in the settlement.

The attackers, who have not been identified yet, shot him three times in the center of a community, leading to his immediate death. After the assault, the culprits quickly ran away from the location.
Superintendent of police Prabhat Kumar mentioned that Bais, who was 40 years old, left his home in Bakhrupara (Narayanpur), the district headquarters, for a leisurely walk on Monday evening. Suddenly, attackers on a motorcycle came near him, threatened him, and then shot him three times in a row, resulting in his immediate death.

The superintendent of police dismissed the involvement of Maoists in the murder. “We are investigating the case and will soon arrive at a conclusion. We are examining all aspects of the case. It may be rivalry behind the incident,” he said.

Kumar also mentioned that the Maoists typically leave pamphlets and other Naxal materials at such incidents to demonstrate their presence. The SP stated that considering this aspect, the incident does not appear to have been committed by Maoists.

The SP promised that the individuals responsible would be captured soon by the authorities.

The deceased had occupied important roles in the party, acting as the vice president of the Block Congress Committee and also as the secretary of the Narayanpur Transport Union.

Residents from nearby houses were drawn by the sound of gunshots and discovered Bais lying in a pool of blood. He was quickly taken to the district hospital, where doctors declared him deceased. The alarming event has caused the settlement to be filled with fear and uncertainty.

Bais, along with PCC chief Deepak Baij and former MLA Chandan Kashyap from Narayanpur, was a strong supporter of the Congress party for a long time.

On April 27, Joga Pdiyam, who was a member of Congress, was attacked by the attackers in Dantewada district. This incident occurred a decade after Joga's 25-year-old son was murdered by rebels in Aranpur.
Before these two murders, almost twelve BJP leaders from Bastar were killed by the Maoists in the past year and a half.
