recently inspected ‘Mohalla’ classes, which are being conducted for those unable to attend online classes. At a school in Rakse village of Lohara block, about 100km from Raipur, he found students playing and the teacher allegedly chatting.

On seeing the officials approaching, the teacher asked children to open their Hindi textbooks. In the viral video,

is seen asking the teacher to write the word ‘Antyeshti’ on a piece of paper, but he fails. A class 4 student was unable to read the Hindi textbook of class 1, when asked by DEO. “If she can’t even read a Hindi book, then mathematics and Sanskrit is far beyond reach,” Pandey said.

“It is very disheartening to see students of primary school, which forms the base for further studies, receiving poor quality education. I was shocked to find that students couldn’t read textbooks of lower classes,” the DEO told TOI.

“There are a lot of shortcomings in the education system, which needs to be resolved to secure the future of students. We have decided to tighten the monitoring system and prepare an action plan on the basis of reports submitted by officials,” he added.

The cluster coordinators have already submitted their reports, he said. “I will monitor five schools each month. A one-month time table will be chalked out and performance reports will be prepared on the fifth of every month to check progress. I am hoping for a positive change with more stringent monitoring and implementation of new teaching strategies,” the DEO said.
