Raipur: A group of youths allegedly blocked the Ambikapur–Banaras state highway in Surguja district on February 16 night to celebrate a birthday, causing a nearly 1-km-long traffic jam and leaving vehicles, including an ambulance, stranded for about 30 minutes.
The incident occurred near a roadside dhaba close to the district border barrier. According to police, the youths--reportedly from Ambikapur--first held a party at the dhaba before parking their four-wheelers across both lanes of the highway. They allegedly burst fireworks on the road and cut a cake on a car bonnet, halting traffic on both sides.
Videos of the celebration went viral on social media, prompting police action. An ambulance is seen stuck in the congestion, though officials said it is not yet confirmed whether a patient was inside.
Police at Latori outpost have registered an FIR against five to seven unidentified youths under Sections 285 and 126(2) and are working to identify those involved. "Based on the viral video, a case has been registered and identities are being verified," outpost in-charge Arun Gupta said.
The incident comes despite recent directions from the Chhattisgarh high court to take strict action against road birthday celebrations, stunts and activities that disrupt traffic. The court had directed authorities to ensure enforcement is strong enough to deter repeat offences.
