Raipur: Four members of a family were killed and another injured when their car plunged into a water-filled quarry in Sarangarh-Bhilaigarh district on Friday. The lone survivor, a 15-year-old girl, managed to get out of the sinking car and swim to safety.
The family was returning from Odisha to Timarlaga village, close to the interstate border and around 200km from Raipur, when the accident happened, say police. The car suddenly lost control and plunged into the mine.
Police named those killed as Timarlaga sarpanch Mahendra Patel, his parents, and wife. Their teenaged daughter survived. She sought help from villagers, who called police. The girl said there were five people in the car.
The accident happened near Timarlaga village. All four bodies have been recovered.
It’s not yet clear how the accident happened. Police are investigating the incident and are checking reports that the family was in debt.
