PUNE: Following adequate rainfall in the catchment areas of Pavana dam this month, the 10 per cent water cut, which is supposed to be in place within the limits of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has, for all intents and purposes, been withdrawn.
The twin township is dependant on the Pavana dam for its water needs. At present, the dam is filled to 98 per cent of its capacity.
Speaking to TOI, Ashish Sharma, municipal commissioner, PCMC, said that there have been good rains in the catchment areas of the Pavana dam and that there is sufficient water in the dam.
Pimpri-Chinchwad mayor Aparna Doke said that there have been no complaints from citizens regarding water shortage. According to Pravin Tupe, joint city engineer, PCMC, "A 10 per cent water cut in the PCMC limits is supposed to be there, but because of the festive season, we are giving water as per the people's demand." He added that the PCMC could later review the decision regarding the water cut.
The PCMC draws around 340 MLD water every day from the Ravet bund on the Pavana river. In June and July, there was a long, dry spell due to which the civic administration imposed a 20 per cent water cut from July 7. At that time, the dam was just 46 per cent full.
However, towards the end of August and beginning of September there were good rains in the catchment areas of Pavana dam. When the water stored in the dam reached nearly 90 per cent of its capacity, around September 15, the corporation decided to reduce the water cut from 20 per cent water to 10 per cent.
