PUNE: Kalyaninagar residents have been hit by water shortages and low pressure supply for the past week.
Officials from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) said there was a problem with a pipeline in Kalyaninagar as supply from the Yerawada water tank was normal. Stormwater pipeline work has been in progress for many months in the locality, and residents fear that it may have affected water pipelines.
The municipal corporation’s decision to cut water supply in the area on Thursday led to major chaos in several households.
“We woke up to dry taps on Friday morning. It was very frustrating as I had to leave for the office and there was no water. The society management was trying its best to restore water at the earliest but could not,” resident Pritesh Gupta said.
Housing societies in the locality have been dependent on water tankers for more than a month because of poor supply.
The chairman of a housing society in the area, Rajesh Waghmare, said: “Our water tanker bills have escalated tremendously this month. The demand increased once summer began. The society water tank is not getting filled up as expected. The water pressure is very low from the corporation’s side. We have officially complained to the civic body and they said the situation would improve, but there has been no change.”
Another resident of Kalyaninagar, Rita Vadodaria, said: “We have to store water on a daily basis. Friday morning was worse than expected as we did not have a single drop of water after the Thursday cut. The society managed to release water to buildings by evening. The entire day was lost and I had to take leave from work because of this.”
Kamyani Damani, a homemaker from the area, said, “The corporation had promised better supply after the new Bhama Askhed dam was built but despite that, if residents have to still struggle for it in summer, then what is the use of this new facility? Water management seems to be very poor by the civic authorities.”
When contacted, an official at the Ahmednagar Road ward office said: “On Thursday, there was a water cut across the city. Since we are resuming supply on Friday, initially pressure will be low, but it will improve. However, supply from the main water takers in Yerawada has been regular.”
