PIMPRI CHINCHWAD: With just 24% water stock available in the Pavana dam, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is bracing for likely water cuts in coming weeks.
The residents under PCMC limits at present get alternate day water supply.
Municipal commissioner Shekhar Singh told TOI, "We are waiting for an updated Met department prediction on the monsoon later this week. A review meeting will then be conducted next week, wherein we will decide on water cuts. If the monsoon prediction is unfavourable, water cuts in the civic limits will be inevitable."
Singh added, "Apart from Pavana dam, we now have buffer water stock in Andra dam as well, treated at the Chikhali water treatment plant. It will be our backup in an emergency."
According to Singh, they are also working with department heads and experts to formulate guidelines on overconsumption of water.
An official from the water supply department said they are identifying possible leakages. Illegal water connections will be connected to metres now, for which the civic body is all set to appoint contractors to commence work in a few weeks.
"There are around 40,000 illegal water connections under the civic limits as per our recent survey. We want to bring those under the water tax ambit," he added.
Pavana dam is the main source of drinking water for PCMC areas, as the civic body lifts 540 million litres a day (MLD) of water from it. PCMC also currently lifts around 50 MLD of water from Andra dam, which could be increased to 100 mld.
