Kulkarni was assisted by his friend Guido Barbagli, who is a world famous urologist from Italy and his wife Jyotsna Kulkarni.
"This surgery is recognized as 'Kulkarni Technique' and is practiced internationally," said Kulkarni in an email reply to TOI.
Elaborating, Kulkarni said, " We may attend conferences around the world as a delegate and sometime as a faculty. But to get invitation to demonstrate surgery in front of a live audience is very rare honour especially in Germany. I got this honour because I have invented this new technique 'Kulkarni Urethroplasty' which is popular all over the world."
In this surgery, the incision is made below the scrotum, there is no incision on the penis, thus preserving its cosmetic appearance. The urethra is dissected on one side, its narrow portion is opened and then patched with buccal mucosal strip (inner lining of the cheek).
The stripe is used as a patch to make the narrow urethra wide. The meeting was attended by more than 200 delegates from around the world. There were 21 faculty members, Kulkarni was the only one from Asia.
