PUNE: Two women and a five-year-old-girl were killed and three others were injured after a container truck hit two motorcycles on the old Mumbai-Pune highway in Lonavla around 3 pm on Saturday.
Lonavla city police identified the deceased as Savita Ganesh Laygude (40) of Premnagar in Lonavla, Lata Nagesh Dhume (26) and Lata's daughter Ovi (5) of Roha in Raigad district.
Ganesh Laygude (45) of Pavananagar near Lonavla, Nagesh Dhume (29) of Roha and Nagesh's son Anush (1) were injured in the accident. The injured have been admitted to hospitals in Lonavla.
According to the police, the container truck driver lost control and hit two motorcycles head-on on the old Mumbai-Pune highway between Lonavla and Khandala. The two families were travelling on two motorcycles. The truck was heading towards Mumbai from Pune, while the two families were heading in the opposite direction.
Inspector Sitaram Dubal of Lonavla city police told TOI, "The two families work as gardeners and caretakers at two bungalows in Khandala. They were on their way to Pavananagar to meet families and friends." "The truck driver was negotiating a turn when he lost control and hit the two motorcycles," he said.
Dubal said, "After colliding with the motorcycles, the truck turned on its side. The driver, too, sustained minor injuries. We have initiated a process to register a case against the truck driver."
