Two arrested & minor detained for damaging 25 vehicles in Bibvewadi
Pune: Armed with bilhooks, three people went on the rampage damaging more than 25 vehicles parked in Upper Indiranagar and VIT College Road areas of Bibvewadi in the early hours of Wednesday.
The trio, including a minor, moved around on a motorcycle, senior inspector Shankar Salunkhe of Bibvewadi police station said. "The incident occurred around 2.30 am. They were hurling threats and their intention was to create terror among local residents."
A man sleeping in his car woke up frighteningly after the windshield was smashed. Soon, residents gathered and the suspects sped away.
Based on a complaint filed by a vehicle owner, Bibvewadi police registered an FIR charging the three with attempt to murder and mischief under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and provisions of the Indian Arms Act.
A team comprising sub-inspector Ashok Yevale and constables Ashish Gaikwad, Sanjay Gaikwad, Pranay Patil, Shivaji Yevale and Ajay Kamthe studied CCTV footage and identified Ganraj Thakur (23) as the prime suspect.
Police tracked the trio's movement towards Sinhagad Road and then to Donje, and finally zeroed in on them around 6 am in Pabe ghat section of Pune-Velhe road off Pune-Panshet Road.
Thakur and Abhishek Pandhare (21) were arrested while their minor accomplice (17) was detained. They were residents of Bibvewadi, police officers said.
"Thakur was arrested previously in cases of body offences. He was detained in prison for a year under provisions of the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Slumlords, Bootleggers, Drug-Offenders and Dangerous Persons Act. He was out on bail," Salunkhe said, adding the minor had previously been booked in a case of body offence.
The vehicles damaged included cars, scooters, motorcycles, autorickshaws and four-wheel tempos, and they were parked on roads near slum pockets, the police said.
