PUNE: The traffic police department on Wednesday suggested adopting several low-cost measures to de-congest the city's roads, which the department feared, were going the Bangalore-way.
In its presentation made to the municipal corporation and other departments, the traffic department expressed its fear of Pune going the Bangalore way, where low speed and traffic congestion were adversely affecting the city's overall development.
Based on the department's observations, it was suggested that utilising the full carriage width of a road, creating bus bays, improving junctions, marking lanes and zebra crossings could go a long way in improving the city's flow of traffic.
"Mega projects such as skybus, metro rail monorail have been proposed, but they are costly projects. Till these projects are completed, other low-cost measures can be taken," the traffic department stated.
Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Manoj Patil said that help has been sought from the municipal corporations for implementing these measures.
Important arterial roads have to be given preference where traffic safety and streamlining measures need to be implemented. The arterial roads include Mumbai-Pune highway stretch, Senapati Bapat road, Sinhagad road, Pune-Satara road, Ganesh Khind road, Ahmednagar road, Airport to Rajbhavan (VIP road), Pune-Solapur road, Karve road, Shastri road, Alandi road, Nehru road, Jangli Maharaj road, Baner road, Aundh road and Paud road.
