Symbiosis, Aston Univ’s research academy to look at solutions for social & industry challenges
Pune: The Symbiosis International University has collaborated with Aston University, Birmingham, UK, to establish the Symbiosis Aston Research Academy for doctorate and postdoctoral studies to resolve social and industry problems.The academy was launched on Monday. Symbiosis Aston Research Academy (SARA) will admit PhD and postdoctoral students for a dual degree research programme. Students will source problem statements from the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce and Industries and work on providing solutions. The research subjects will include applied artificial intelligence, healthcare, climate change and sustainability.Vice-chancellor and chief executive of Aston University Aleks Subic spoke to reporters. He said, "We have been collaborating with Symbiosis for the last eight years. SARA marks a milestone in our joint venture. We want to develop it as a prestigious global research academy with a socio-economic impact."The academy will be a multidisciplinary platform aimed to develop high-impact research centred on opportunities in industry and business, as well as other challenges societies face. The focus will be on joint PhD programmes wherein faculty from both institutions provide co-supervision, collaborative and multidisciplinary research across defined thematic areas and industry and business engagement for impactful socio-economic outcomes.The pro-chancellor of Symbiosis International (Deemed University) said, "Our research model can be replicated anywhere in India. The concentration is on applied research with impact as the outcome. We will begin with requirements coming from the industry and work for social innovation." Joint admissions will be conducted, targeting at least 100 students in the first batch which will spend at least one term at Aston.PhD scholars will experience unique learning ecosystems that SIU and Aston have distinctively created by spending semesters on both campuses (in India and the UK). The dual doctoral degrees will ensure robust academic and industry recognition globally.SARA will also seek active industry collaborations and engage with industry partners for sponsored research, technology transfer and commercialisation, aligning its research with market demands and relevant policy frameworks.
