Pune: Suhitha Maruri and Sonal Patil scored hard-fought wins to advance to the quarterfinals while local boy Manas Dhamne survived a scare in the ITF Asian B1 Junior (Under-18) tennis championships, organised by MSLTS-PMDTA at Deccan Gymkhana, on Tuesday.

On a day when the receding severely disrupted the schedule with the last match finishing close to 11 pm, Suhitha and Sonal came from a set down to beat their opponents.

Suhitha overcame Singapore’s Sue Yan Tan 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 while Sonal defeated fellow Indian Lakshmi Prabha 0-6, 6-2, 6-4.

India’s No. 1 and 2 girls Shruti Ahlawat and Vaishnavi Adkar had straightforward wins while Rishitha Basireddy went down to top seed Yu-Yun Li of Chinese Taipei 2-6, 3-6.

In the boys’ section, seeded Indians Aman Dahiya (No. 2), Yuvan Nandal (3) and Aryan Shah (6) scored contrasting wins while Japan’s Takamasa Mishiro shocked top seed Hayden Jones of Australia 6-2, 6-4.

Manas needed to dig deep to beat Rethin Pranav to post a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory.
