PUNE: A bomb disposal unit of the Indian Army's

Southern Command

has launched a special operation called "Operation Thiruvallur" to dispose of

unexploded ordnance

present in industrial areas of Thiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu.

The ordnance was inadvertently collected by some companies over the years and it could pose a danger to the lives of people living in the surrounding. In fact, one person had died a few years ago in the locality, said the army sources.

"The operation is a classic demonstration of joint coordination and planning undertaken between the Army and Tamil Nadu state government, on whose request the operation has been specifically approved by Ministry of Defence (MoD). The aim of the operation is to ensure a safe environment for all citizens in and around Gummidipoondi," said the Command authorities.

About 10

tonnes of unexploded ordnance

in the general area of the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) in Thiruvallur district, said the sources.

"It is an intricate and complex effort involving many weeks of detailed planning and coordination with the civil authorities. The operation involves segregation and disposal of unexploded ordnance from a metal scrap dump, now covered with undergrowth. The dump had been lying unattended after a violent blast and consequent death of a factory worker a few years back," added the sources.

"The overriding factor whilst planning and undertaking the operation has been safety. The operation is likely to continue for few days as personnel are exploding the ordnance in a precise manner. Some of hundred kilogrammes of ordnance have already been disposed off by the army in the last few days," said the sources.
