PUNE: The Yerawada police have booked an unidentified man for allegedly sending a smartphone through a parcelled book to Malegaon bomb blast accused Ramesh Upadhyay in Yerawada prison on Friday.
The parcel was sent from Mumbai. “The name of the sender and his address could be fake,” said inspector Vilas Sonde of the Yerawada police station. Police have registered the offence under section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code.
Upadhyay, an army major, was arrested in November 2008 for his alleged involvement in the Malegaon blast. He was accused of conspiring with the prime accused
Lt Col Shrikant Purohit. Upadhyay has been lodged in the Yerawada prison.
A senior officer from the Yerawada prison said a parcel was received in the name of Upadhyay on Friday. “When the prison authorities checked it on Saturday and found a book. When it was scanned, the authorities found a case inside. The bomb detection and disposal squad was summoned and they found a smartphone inside the case,” the officer said. “We are probing though which post office the parcel
