PUNE: A committee has been constituted for the selection of the new vice-chancellor of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU).

The committee will be headed by former chairman of All India Council of Technical Education Anil Sahasrabuddhe. Director of IIT Kanpur Abhay Karandikar, additional chief secretary of water resources department Deepak Kapoor and former V-C of Karnataka Women's University Meena Chandavarkar will be the other members

Pro-VC of SPPU Sanjeev Sonawane said after Nitin Karmalkar's tenure as V-C ended on May 18, 2022, Babasaheb Ambedkar Technical University’s vice-chancellor Karbhari Kale was entrusted with additional duties. The selection process was stalled as the governor did not approve the changes made by the Mahavikas Aghadi government in the University Act.

After the transfer of power in the state, the state government decided to cancel the proposed changes in the University Act.

A selection committee was appointed under the chairmanship of former Justice Shubhra Kamal Mukherjee. However, the committee did not include a representative of the University Grants Commission. Despite this, the state government announced to implement the V-C selection process.

Sonawane said, “Accordingly, the process of selecting the V-C of SPPU was started and the advertisement was also released. Eligible persons have also filed the applications.”

Since this selection was not according to the UGC rules, there was a possibility that process of appointment of V-C would have got hampered in the future. Therefore, the committee was restructured.
