PUNE: After lying idle for 15 months, the Baburao Sanas athletic ground near Sarasbaug is set to witness action, with the third leg of the Asian Grand Prix to be held there on May 26. The Rs 3.5-crore 400-metre synthetic track, laid as per international standards, was established by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) in February 2005. Thanks to poor management by the PMC, the ground has ever since remained unutilised.
Speaking to TOI on Monday, municipal commissioner Nitin Kareer said steps would be taken to make the ground available to athletes at the earliest.
"Discussions are on with Pune District Amateur Athletic Association officials to finalise the responsibility of monitoring the track. By the time the Asian Grand Prix is held, some concrete plan will be ready for future use of the ground."Busan Asiad champions, including ace Indian long jumper Anju Bobby George, Sri Lankas sprinter Damayanti Darsha and Fenjg Yun of China, will participate.
