Pune: Leftover rubble is posing threat to commuters, especially two-wheeler riders, in Kalyaninagar, several months after bylanes were dug up for repairs.
Contractors the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) appointed have left the rubble and road material unattended for several months after repairing the bylanes, triggering several accidents. Many motorbike riders slipped and skidded during the night time.
Roshan Furniturewala from Lane Number 9 of Kalyaninagar said, “There have been quite a few incidents when bike riders tipped over because of rubble left at turns. These incidents could turn serious in future. Before that, quick action needs to be taken. The contractors concerned should be fined.”
Kalyaninagar residents raised a complaint with the PMC ward officer. But no action had been initiated so far, said one of them. So, rubble remain to trouble commuters.
Robin Azavedo, another resident of Kalyaninagar, said, “Despite many calls to the contractors and PMC officials, no action has been taken to remove the rubble. We understand that tarring of roads required floating of tenders. But why the contractors left the excess material for being picked on a further date?”
PMC’s junior engineer Sidram Patil, said, “We agree that there is still some material on some lanes, but we have to follow the process. The road construction work is under way and apart from that, the stormwater line would be laid on Joggers’ Park Road. All these works are interconnected and so the material are lying here and there. Within this week, we shall clear the roads and make them free of any hurdles.”
A section of residents claimed that this rubble is disturbing the beauty of the neighbourhood, damaging its image. Shilpa Raut, a resident of Lane Number 9, said, “We are all so fed up because this leftover material has tarnished the beauty of Kalyaninagar. We have suffered enough and now tired of telling PMC to speed up the work.”
