PUNE: A 34-year-old woman under in vitro fertilization (IVF)
treatment
in the city delivered twins on Saturday. As she lives in a red zone, the doctors tested her and the babies for Covid-19. The woman tested positive, but her children tested negative.
Officials from the fertility centre said the mother and the twins - a girl and a boy - were healthy and on the road to recovery.
Gynaecologists and IVF specialists Amol Lunkad and
Ishita Lunkad
performed the delivery via C-section.
Hospital officials said the woman arrived in severe pain and with swellings all over. "Pregnant with twins, she was admitted as an emergency case as she also was suffering from severe hypertension," the officials said, adding that C-section was suggested following a preliminary examination.
Since she came from a Covid-19 red zone she had to be tested for the virus. But the delivery could not wait and she was rushed in for the procedure. "Any delay in treatment fearing
coronavirus infection could have proved dangerous for both mother and babies," Amol Lunkad said.
All personal precautions and safety guidelines prescribed by the World Health Organisation were followed during the delivery, officials said.
Both babies, having been delivered pre-term, are convalescing in the nursery under the care of a neonatologist. "The woman's report came back positive, but she was asymptomatic. Both babies tested negative for the virus," doctors said. "The woman has been advised quarantine until she repeatedly tests negative," doctors added.
"As this is a novel virus, we are learning about it. However, there is little evidence to suggest an increased risk of miscarriage or transmission from mother to baby. Though vertical transmission is rare, we require more evidence," Ishita Lunkad said.
