Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and occurs when the protective cartilage cushioning the ends of the bones wears down over time. Although osteoarthritis can damage any joint, the disorder most commonly affects joints in the hands, knees, hips and spine, medical experts said.

Farmer Vijay Himmatrao Patil, a resident of Khamkheda village in Dhule district, also suffered from diabetes and hypertension. The severe osteoarthritis in both the knees left him with acute pain and deformity, making simple tasks like walking an ordeal.

He was referred to the Sassoon hospital, where he underwent the robotic surgery on September 8. The surgery was performed using 'Cuvis' joint robotic system by Dr Pravin Deokate (robotic arthroplasty surgeon) with robotic arthroplasty surgeon Dr Rahul Puranik.

Dr Sanjiv Thakur, dean at BJ Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital, said, "There are many advantages of robotic total knee replacement surgery. It requires less soft tissue handling during the surgery, which ultimately leads to early healing, less postoperative pain and quick recovery. The robotic surgery also increases precision for more accurate joint replacements, leading to higher success rate of surgery."

He said, "I am proud that we are the first government hospital to conduct this robotic surgery in any government institute in state."

When contacted, the patient told TOI, "I couldn't afford the surgery at private hospitals due to financial constraints and huge cost involved in the procedure. I came to know about free joint replacement surgeries being carried out at the Sassoon hospital in Pune from my relatives. So, I decided to get admitted at the hospital,"
