PUNE: Mountaineer Varun Bhagwat, associated with Pune-based mountaineering organisation Giripremi, recently climbed Mount Kang Yatse II, a 6,300 metre tall peak in Marka Valley of the Leh-Kargil region.
The expedition to Mt Kang Yatse II was organised by Giripremi for novice mountaineers. A team of three novice mountaineers - Bhagwat, Rohan Desai and Ruturaj Aagwane had embarked on the expedition on July 26.
According to Giripremi representatives, the team reached the base camp of Mt Kang Yatse II after a four-day trek. "Aagwane had to abort the expedition due to poor health while Bhagwat and Desai continued.
On the midnight of July 30, the duo left the base camp for their summit push. After eight hours of climbing, Bhagwat reached the summit of Mt Kang Yatse II at around 8.30am.
Desai met with a small accident just 400 metres before the peak and had to discontinue the climb to return to the base camp," the representatives said.
The representatives added that the summit gives mesmerizing views and one can see Mount Nun, Mount Kun and the Northern Himalayan range including Mount K2 from the peak.
Giripremi's 8,000 meter expedition leader Umesh Zirpe had mentored the mountaineers for the expedition.
