PUNE: Theatre personality Pravin Bhole of Pune has been honoured with the Vinod Doshi Fellowship in Performing Arts worth Rs one lakh instituted by city-based organisation Sahitya Rangbhoomi Pratishthan.
The organisation founded in 2003 by a group of experienced artists aims at fulfilling requirements of the theatre and art community. The fellowship is meant to be an additional source of income for the awardees so that they can pursue their creative interests freely for the year.
Of the five names announced for the 2009-2010 fellowship, Irawati Karnik, Hidayat Sami and Manav Kaul are from Mumbai, Rajendra Tangde is from Jalna and Pravin Bhole is from Pune.

All recipients are well-established personalities from the world of experimental theatre and have contributed significantly to the revival and advancement of modern Marathi and Hindi theatre.
Sachin Kundalkar, Satish Manwar, Mohit Takalkar, Sandesh Kulkarni and Umesh Kulkarni are some people who have received the fellowship earlier.
With a doctorate in theatre arts, Bhole has also been a lecturer at the Lalit Kala Kendra at the University of Pune and is a part of the visiting faculty there.
Saying that the fellowship means a lot to him since he will now be able to attend a theatre festival in Poland held in the memory of theatre director Jerzy Grotowski, Bhole added that experimental theatre in Pune now needs more spaces like the Su-Darshan Rangmanch. "Also people should be more self-exploratory in terms of scripts and acting rather than just performing with the aim of winning a prize in some competition," he said.
Bhole, who is an accomplished playwright, director, actor and a designer of space, light and costume, has directed a number of plays and has been invited to various international workshops and theatre festivals.
The fellowship is instituted in the name of industrialist Vinod Doshi who had a passion for theatre, fine arts and music. Every year, awardees are selected by an organisation-appointed panel, which included theatre personalities Sunil Shanbhag and Satish Alekar this year.
