PUNE: Water supply to the city and the cantonment areas was severely hit on Thursday evening following a major power failure that lasted for nearly five hours.
The water pumping machinery at the Parvati water works and the Cantonment water works — the two main water treatment and distribution centres — came to an halt around 2.20 pm. Though the power supply was restored around 7.30 pm, the water supply was disrupted in the evening due to the delay.
Speaking to TNN, civic water department chief, V.G.
Kulkarni said the water supply would be normal on Friday morning. “The water pumps have started working since the evening and we are confident that tomorrow’s water supply will not be affected, he added.
Meanwhile, the main air valve on the cantonment water works supply line at the Parvati water works burst open on Thursday morning, inundating a section of Sinhagad road from Sarasbaugh to Dandekar bridge and the lane towards the Neelayam cinema-hall. This led to a wastage of several litres of water.
The civic staff swung into action and repaired the valve within an hour of the breach.
