Poet-saint Tukaram’s descendant ‘kills self over financial woes’

PUNE: The descendant of 17th century Marathi poet-saint Tukaram, Shirish More Maharaj (32), allegedly ended his life at his residence in Pune, police said on Wednesday.

A suicide note found at the kirtan performer's home in Dehu Road area stated that he took the extreme step because of financial distress.

"On Wednesday morning, when his parents knocked on the door of his room on the first floor of the house, there was no response. They alerted the police, who arrived and broke open the door, only to find More Maharaj hanging from the ceiling," said an officer of Pimpri Chinchwad police.

The body of More Maharaj was sent for autopsy and further investigation was underway, the officer said. More Maharaj was a well-known 'kirtankar' (a performer of 'kirtan' or traditional religious discourse) and spiritual speaker, who was revered in the community.
