Pune: Developers of mobile applications, researchers, students, and citizens can now access authentic data about Pune at the click of a mouse. The
Pune Municipal Corporation
(
PMC
) has come up with a special 'open data website' where civic data will be uploaded in different file formats. This data bank is free of cost to the citizens.
The PMC launched the Pune City Open Data Store facility, opendata.punecorporation.org, in a special programme at
Bal Gandharva Auditorium
on Sunday.
"The project has been designed on the lines of Union Government's Open Government Data platform. It can be used to develop digital solutions for civic issues and real time data will be available," PMC commissioner
Kunal Kumar
told reporters.
He added that there are free as well as paid services, and are developed by application designers. The corporation will not have any control over this. Direct public access will be given to the data which will be collected from each department. The PMC has appointed a data officer to each civic department for the purpose of updating data in real time. New applications for road repairs, officers' performance analysis and public grievance redressal will also be developed. All major citizen-related services -related to government offices, police and traffic departments - will be made available on this app. The new website will be available in 76 languages, including foreign. Apart from the new initiatives, PMC also plans to upgrade its existing mobile applications and website.
"These initiatives will help in increasing the public participation, which will ultimately improve civic facilities. These services will be available on mobile as well as computer platforms," said
Rahul Jagtap
, head of PMC's IT department.
He said that students and application designers who wish to develop or help with IT solutions for PMC can use these applications.
