PUNE: The crime branch of Pune police on Wednesday arrested Nepalese national Soam Bahadur Tamang (25) at Nashik for the
murder of Nepalese maid Sanju Sangram Tamang (30) in a flat on Handewadi road on July 3.
The body was recovered from the bathroom. The mouth was covered with tape and the hands and legs were tied.
Additional commissioner of police Anant Shinde (crime) said that Soam was taken into custody from a lodge at Bhadrakali area in Nashik when he was planning to flee to Nepal.
Deputy commissioner of police Rajesh Bansode (crime) said they had recovered ornaments and cash worth Rs 5.27 lakh from him. He was brought to Pune for further investigations
Inspector Sunil Pawar (Unit IV) said that Soam lived on Bajirao Road and worked in a pharmacy. He had planned to rob Sukhbahadur Jitbahadur Tamang's flat at Ganga Village society on Handewadi road a month ago. When he attempted to do so on July 3 , the maid stopped him and was killed.
Tamang had been working for Sukhbahadur for a year. He went to Mumbai on July 3, leaving the maid and his daughter behind.
When the girls were leaving for school around 9 am, a person, apparently known to Tamang, arrived.
When the girls returned at 11.30 am, they saw items scattered and cash and ornaments missing from the cupboard in the bedroom.
The girls alerted the security guard, but their flat got locked. It could be opened after Sukhbahadur arrived at 5 pm. The Wanowrie police found Tamang's body in the bathroom. She was strangled with a rope.
