PUNE: The Pune Municipal Corporation employees union's plan to conduct a prabhat pheri' (morning rally) on May 1, to create awareness about utilising wet waste to develop gardens has received support from noted astrophysicist Jayant Narlikar. In a letter expressing support for the drive, Narlikar said that all citizens should strive to keep their surroundings clean.
In December, the PMC employees union had stated that 2009 would be a cleanliness drive year'. Friday's rally will begin at 7 am from the PMC headquarters in Shivajinagar.
Narlikar has said in his letter, "Just like Galileo stressed on seeking information about the environment by being alert, citizens' should be alert in keeping their surroundings clean. So, all of us can learn from this important drive." The employees union is of the opinion that scientific segregation of waste and proper composting of wet waste is the only solution to the serious garbage problems the city faces on Wednesday.
