PUNE: Neighbourhoods on either side of the Ahmednagar Road, including Kalyani Nagar, Wadgaonsheri, Viman Nagar and Kharadi, have been reporting frequent power cuts and fluctuations over the past week.

On Tuesday morning, there were frequent power fluctuations. Within a span of 3-4 hours, residents reported fluctuations at least four to five times.Residents said their electrical appliances were being damaged too. Despite calling the MSEDCL office, in their respective areas, they got no response.

Nishikant Raut, the PRO of the power utility, said the technical issues on Nagar Road as well as in Viman Nagar, Kharadi and other areas are being looked into. They will be resolved on priority within a week.

Another MSEDCL official said: "Kalyani Nagar, Kharadi, Yerwada, Wadgaonsheri, Dhanori and Viman Nagar areas get power supply from the Theur and Kharadi sub-stations. But in the past few days, industrial consumption has increased. This has resulted in small power failures."

One Kalyani Nagar resident, Sukeshni Pawar, said the sudden fluctuations led to significant damage to electrical appliances at his home. "I have lost my microwave due to the outage. I was baking, when the power suddenly went off. There was a loud shuddering sound and the microwave went bust. This is the third incident of appliance loss within our society."

Residents also complained that many who work from home are facing a terrible time due to the outages. Kharadi resident Shweta Purohit said, "We need to keep our laptops and phones charged at all times. I just cannot take a chance. I ensure at night that my devices are charged to begin work in the morning. The power problem usually starts in the morning and continues till late in the evening."

Ramvilas Vadodaria, a senior citizen from Viman Nagar, added, "The summers are difficult given the increase in temperature. We cannot keep the air conditioners on throughout the day, but the nights become impossible without air conditioners. There is usually no response to the phone calls made to MSEDCL. In a day, there are a minimum of five outages."

The IT employees in these neighbourhoods are also facing problems as their WiFi connections are affected every time the power goes off.

Rushil Doshi, an IT employee living in Kharadi, said: "Once the power goes off, the WiFi gets switched off. And when the power supply is restored, it takes a minimum of 10 minutes it to resume service. This happens 5-6 times a day. It is very frustrating. Sometimes, I am doing some important job, and suddenly the laptop connection goes off. We are paying for these services and the authorities must ensure that we get an uninterrupted power supply."

In Kondhwa's Sunshree locality, power cuts take place almost every morning for an hour. Sometimes, even twice or thrice a day, and each one of them last one-two hour. "There is a power cut at around 6-7am in the morning for an hour or two. Our sleep is ruined, as it's too hot to sleep without an air conditioner or a fan. In addition to this, on some days, we have power cuts in the afternoons and evenings too, for half an hour or one hour," said Shweta Pandey, a resident of the area.
