PUNE: Ritesh and Rajnish Mishra, sons of

Rajan Mishra

, decided to sing together for a reason.
“If we sing together, we stay together,“ said Ritesh, representing the sixth generation of musicians. “This helps us develop love and bonding. We both are married and live in a joint family comprising 15 people and one kitchen,“ they said.

Their singing on the second day of Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav was indicative enough of the telepathic understanding they share, much like their fatheruncle duo of Pandit Rajan-Sajan Mishra.

Their biggest challenge is to live up to the lofty standards set by Rajan-Sajan.

“The last time we came at Sawai festival was in 2012. We had presented raag Jog together. We were appreciated well after we came down from the stage,“ said Ritesh. “But then, Panditji (Rajan-Sajan) presented raag

immediately afterwards on the same stage. And they washed away our presentation, like Surf Excel!“ they said.

Taught by the legendary duo, the choice of ragas (Multani, Madhuvanti) and compositions by Ritnesh-Rajnish on Thursday , was out of the top drawer, befitting the time cycle and mood.

They recited a tarana taught to them by their grandfather and brought down curtains on Multani with `Aangan Mein Nandalal', a composition made famous by Rajan-Sajan.

Ritesh-Rajnish's grandfathers are Pandit Hanuman Prasad Mishra and

Gopal Mishra

, both Sarangi exponents.

“Our grandfathers used to tell us that if you listen to your gurus properly , you will always find the right direction,“ said the duo.

Both wanted to do stuff outside classical music. “We had had our higher studies and courses to join Indian Navy. The greatness of our father lies in the fact that he didn't force his views on us.Slowly , we realized that the purpose our life is music, love, peace and togetherness. So we came back to our roots for good.“
