MIDC hikes service charges in Hinjewadi, Chakan, and Talegaon after 17-year hiatus
Pune: For the first time in 17 years, Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) has increased service charges in Hinjewadi, Talegaon, and Chakan industrial areas.
The revision is aimed at funding massive infrastructure upgrades across these critical industrial hubs.
Under the revised rates, an industrial unit with a land allotment of 500 square metres would see charges rise from Rs4.75 per sq metre to Rs12 per sq metre. Larger units would face higher tiers: companies with 1,500 sq. metres would be charged Rs13 per sq metre, while those with 2,000 sq metres or more would pay Rs15 per sq metre. These rates are now uniform across all three industrial zones.
The proposal to hike charges was originally floated in 2019 but was suspended following strong opposition from industry representatives. Subsequent lockdowns and economic uncertainties caused by the pandemic further delayed the implementation. The current revision follows fresh consultations with industry stakeholders from respective areas.
"The revision in service charges was long overdue and is essential for maintaining and expanding infrastructure in these three zones," said Kalidas Bhandekar, chief engineer, MIDC Pune.
MIDC plans to construct roads beneath the new Metro line in Hinjewadi IT Park, concretise peripheral roads, build a flyover at Lakshmi Chowk, and widen approach roads and drainage systems to ease congestion.
To address the heavy vehicular traffic on Chakan-Talegaon Road, MIDC has allocated approximately Rs167 crore to build a dedicated concrete road for heavy vehicles. Total planned infrastructure work for Chakan — which spans 3,300 hectares — is estimated at Rs323 crore.
In Talegaon MIDC, funds would be used to develop basic infrastructure for major units, including Hyundai Motors. This includes the construction of four-lane approach roads and stormwater drainage systems. The budget also covers the upkeep of the 1,500-hectare area, which houses various engineering and floriculture hubs.
By updating these service charges, MIDC aims to resolve long-standing operational issues like potholes and traffic bottlenecks, ensuring a more efficient environment for multinational automotive and manufacturing companies operating in the region.
