PUNE : The mechanised public car parking facility on J M Road will remain closed until new contract terms are designed and executed.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had sealed the facility after a spot inspection by municipal commissioner Om Prakash Bakoria revealed that a private car dealer was using a major portion of the facility.
The parking space was sealed in January.
The parking lot, near Sambhaji garden, was initiated by the PMC in 2007 to reduce on-street parking on J M Road. It can accommodate 80 cars and the charges are Rs 5 per hour.
“The key intention behind starting the project was to create a facility for common people. But if it is used for commercial activities, it defeats the purpose,” Bakoria told reporters on Monday.
He said the civic administration is working on new contract system for this parking.
“The new contract terms should make sure that the common people use parking. Legal consultation for making the changes is underway and is at the final stage,” he said.
