Marathi actor Solapurkar resigns as BORI trustee

Pune: A day after apologizing for his statement about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's escape from Agra, Marathi actor Rahul Solapurkar on Thursday resigned as trustee of Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute (BORI).
His statement had led to protests by political outfits at BORI in Pune on Wednesday. BORI also issued a press statement saying it had accepted Solapurkar's resignation.
A statement signed by BORI honorary secretary Sudhir Vaishampayan stated: "Mr Rahul Solapurkar has resigned from the position of ‘trustee' at Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, and the institute has accepted his resignation. Everyone should take note of this."
In his apology video issued on his social media handles, Solapurkar stated that he never intended to insult Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and such a thought would never occur to him.
Solapurkar said, "I gave an interview about a month-and-a-half ago. During that time, I talked about how history and interesting aspects of history are formed. Some people created controversy by using those two sentences from my entire interview. I would never think of insulting Shivaji Maharaj."
Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar said, "We have received a written complaint application against actor Rahul Solapurkar from a group of people. We will study the application first before initiating any legal action."
