MALEGAON: Senior legislator and former minister Nihal Ahmed, who was last week elected the first mayor of Malegaon, has promised to make special efforts to change the image of Malegaon, which is better remembered for frequent communal riots.
Speaking to TNN, Ahmed said he had already called for formation of joint committees of police officials and citizens to prevent crimes in the city, in an effort to put an end to the city’s dubious distinction of being a ‘haven for criminals’.

Ahmed refuted the charge that he had always taken a stance against the majority community in order to ensure support from the minority.
He said he would hold dialogue with representatives of various communities to arrive at consensus on contentious issues. Ahmed, who is among the most senior legislators in the state, however, said he would continue be active in politics in the state.
